Endometriosis, a systemic, inflammatory disease process affecting 1 in 9 people, continues to go unaddressed and untreated in a majority of cases. With 3 in 4 patients misdiagnosed, Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) is proud to be a part of expanding knowledge and creating awareness of the disease and how to care for those with endo. Addressing this complex disorder requires a multidisciplinary approach, where specialists from various fields collaborate to provide the best care possible. Recently, at the Endometriosis Summit, a few of our endometriosis experts at PRM shared our collective expertise and commitment to improving the lives of those affected by endometriosis.

The Endometriosis Summit believes in advancing endometriosis education, advocacy, and hope for patients and practitioners. PRM’s involvement in the Endometriosis Summit was multifaceted, encompassing educational sessions, expert panels, and inclusive social events.

Dr. Haverland Shares Expertise on Endometriosis Excision Surgery

Dr. Rachael Haverland shared her first-hand experience with performing excision surgery on a patient who had previously had ablation surgery with another provider.

Key takeaways for patients:

– Ablation does not fully remove lesions

– Ablation causes damage to the surrounding healthy tissue

– Ablation causes scarring, which can lead to pain later on

Excision surgery is more effective, and is the only
form of endo surgery performed by the surgeons at PRM

Dr. Sandhu-Restaino Shares Expertise on Endometriosis and the Pelvic Floor

Dr. Sandhu-Restaino shared her knowledge on how endometriosis affects the pelvic floor and how treatment at PRM can improve overall pelvic floor pain and function for endometriosis patients.

Key takeaways for patients:

– Endometriosis directly affects the pelvic floor nerves and muscles

– PRM’s goal with treatment is to increase blood flow to heal the pelvic nerves

The PRM Protocol™ is the only treatment that effectively reduces inflammation and creates space between the nerves and muscles

Dr. Mamsaang Shares Expertise on the Pelvic Floor

Dr. Marjorie Maye Mamsaang, alongside Dr. Sandhu-Restaino, discussed evaluation and treatment from the medical perspective of pelvic floor tone, pelvic nerve irritation, and pudendal nerve pathology.

Key takeaways for patients:

– PRM evaluates the pelvic floor at each new patient visit to ensure we fully understand your pain and symptoms and can give an accurate diagnosis

– PRM treats the pelvic floor nerves and muscles through an ultrasound-guided approach because it is safer and non-invasive

– Dr. Mamsaang and all other PRM pelvic pain specialists are experts in understanding how endometriosis affects the nerves and muscles in the pelvis

Dr. Ahmed Shares Expertise on Exercise and Endometriosis

Dr. Tayyaba Ahmed shared her knowledge on helping patients to recover from endometriosis excision surgery, and how to reintroduce exercise safely.

Key takeaways for patients:

– Patients should slowly return to exercise at the guidance of their provider following endometriosis excision surgery

– Exercises like yoga or swimming are low-impact and a great place to start

– PRM works alongside pelvic floor physical therapists to help patients recover, get stronger, and increase their pelvic floor function for more aggressive exercise

Dr. Allyson Shrikhande Shares Expertise on Neuromuscular Connection to Endo and the PRM Protocol™

Dr. Ally shared insights on the PRM Protocol™ and the impact of desensitization on the pelvic floor for endometriosis patients 0 before and after surgery. She shared clinical outcomes from thousands of patients showing how treatment at PRM can improve overall pelvic floor pain and function for endometriosis patients.

Key takeaway for patients:

– Endometriosis directly affects the pelvic floor nerves and muscles

– PRM’s goal with treatment is to increase blood flow to heal the pelvic nerves

The PRM Protocol™ improves function, decreased emergency room and opioid usage, and keeps patients present at work and school

All-Conference Social Hosted by Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine

PRM was proud to sponsor an all-conference social for both patients and endometriosis professionals. Together, attendees enjoyed an evening of food music, and meaningful conversation around personal experiences with endo and sharing insight into treatment.
